From 2005 to 2007, Advance Institute of Business General Manager Craig Hill worked as a Journalist and Support Worker with Big Issue Magazine in Brisbane. Big Issue Magazine works to provide employment opportunities and find housing for the homeless.
During this time Big Issue developed a system whereby a client could approach Big Issue in the morning and be in accommodation by that afternoon. This involved using faxes to apply to housing corporations, find suitable accommodation and apply for government housing bond loans.
Big Issue also contacted community organisations such as Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul and Lifeline to arrange furniture for this accommodation, which in most cases was delivered the same day.
Craig also wrote articles on homelessness which were published in numerous newspapers and magazines nationally, and was interviewed by print media, radio and television. He also spoke at seminars and at community organisations in Brisbane about the homelessness issue in Australia.
In 2006, Craig was recognised for his work by being awarded a $75,000 grant from Vodafone Australia as part of Vodafone’s World of Difference program. This was used to pay his wages and expenses for twelve months to continue his work for Big Issue Magazine.
This was just one of many community organisations throughout Australia that Advance Institute of Business has been involved with over the past thirty years.
